Lionheart games 2023
With the buzz of National School Sports Week slowly dying down after its conclusion on Sunday 25th June, Trust-wide hype and excitement was soon cranked back up as, just a day later, sport returned to centre stage with the first ever Lionheart Games!Taking place at the Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium in Leicester, this event pitted the Trust’s eight secondary schools - Beauchamp College, The Castle Rock School, The Cedars Academy. Humphrey Perkins School, Judgemeadow Community College, Martin High School, The Newbridge School and Sir Jonathan North Girls’ College – against each other, with a friendly, yet competitive spirit.
The students were split into four categories; Junior Boys and Girls (year 7 and 8) and Inter Boys and Girls (year 9 and 10) before tackling a range of athletic events – both track and field based - that tested strength, power, athleticism and endurance.
Each category would have one overall winner, whilst a ‘Sportsmanship Cup’ was also on offer for the school that demonstrated the best attitude.
The events consisted of a variety of track races – ranging from 100m to 1500m – a relay race and an array of field activities; including long jump, triple jump, javelin and discus. The competing students took part in one track and one field event, whilst some also took part in the relay.
Suitably inspired by the previous week’s focus on sport, and amidst fierce competition, the students gave everything – demonstrating the Trust’s 4Rs - and were enthusiastically cheered on by their teammates in the stands, which made for a terrific atmosphere.
The winners were as follows:
Junior Boys - Beauchamp College
Junior Girls - Sir Jonathan North Girls’ College
Inter Boys – The Cedars Academy
Inter Girls - Sir Jonathan North Girls’ College
Sportsmanship Cup - The Newbridge School
Congratulations to all those schools who were victorious and also to every young person who took part in the event.
“The students were great ambassadors for their schools and showed a fantastic attitude and approach to their events,” said Mrs Ardley, Trust-wide PE lead.
Thanks is also merited by staff and sports leaders who supported on the day, and those who helped to organise the event, which ran extremely smoothly.
The bar has certainly been raised for next year!
