Local MP Peter Bedford visits Martin High and Highcliffe Primary
We were thrilled to welcome Peter Bedford – the Conservative Member of Parliament for Mid Leicestershire – to two of our schools – Martin High in Anstey and Birstall’s Highcliffe Primary – this month.Upon arriving at Martin High, Peter was taken on a tour of the school’s new state-of-the-art Sports Hall by Executive Principal Laura Sanchez. While there, he also watched the Girls’ Futsal team participate in a match.
Peter then met with the school’s Student Leadership Team for coffee and cake, where learners posed pre-prepared questions, which Peter answered in great detail.
They spoke about his motivation to pursue a career in politics, what his typical week looks like and the educational opportunities the Conservative Party are planning to introduce for young people, with a specific focus on apprenticeships.
“It was fantastic to meet Peter Bedford at Martin High School,” said Mrs Sanchez.
“In his 100th day as a Member of Parliament, he spoke with our learners about what life was like as an MP and how he was passionate about equity of opportunity in education.
“He wants to ensure that apprenticeships are well funded and provide ambitious opportunity for all.
“It was great to have him at school and brilliant to have such insight into the work that he does.”
Later, Peter made the short journey to Birstall to meet pupils at Highcliffe Primary.
He was taken on a mini tour, before meeting with the school’s Wellbeing Ambassadors, English Experts and Eco Council members, who enjoyed asking him questions, this time from a primary perspective.
Next, it was off to the hall, as Peter joined Highcliffe for their Friday assembly, where the school celebrated attendance and applauded the week’s notable achievements. There was just enough time to come together for a song before Peter bid staff and pupils farewell.
“It was fantastic for Mr Bedford to see our school in action,” said Highcliffe Head of School Mrs Stewart.
“Our pupil ambassadors met with him to ask questions about his life both in and out of politics.
“He then joined us for a very special Friday celebration assembly.”
On visiting our schools, Peter said: “I understand the importance of visiting educational establishments in my constituency which will help me to understand the challenges faced by schools and educational institutions.”
"It was great to see first-hand the opportunities available to the young people at Martin High and Highcliffe Primary School during my visit."
We are very thankful to Peter for sparing the time to meet with our young people, who thoroughly enjoyed quizzing the man tasked with overseeing their local community.
