Local MP Shockat Adam visits Sir Jonathan North and Beauchamp City
In early February, we were delighted to welcome Shockat Adam – the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester South – to Sir Jonathan North Girls’ College and Beauchamp City Sixth FormSir Jonathan North Girls’ College, Knighton
First up was a visit to Sir Jonathan North, and the students were abuzz with excitement, anticipating the arrival of their important visitor.
Upon arrival, Shockat was warmly greeted by Executive Principal James McKenna and Associate Principal Dr Helen Coles-Hennessy, who led him on an engaging tour of the school grounds. The tour provided an opportunity to showcase the school's recent outstanding Ofsted result and discuss potential collaborations to further support the local community.
Following this, Shockat met with an enthusiastic group of the school’s citizenship students, who enjoyed asking him a wide range of questions. They were keen to learn about the impactful changes Shockat has implemented in his constituency, such as amplifying the voices of the people of Leicester South, providing essential healthcare assistance, and supporting the education of individuals from war-torn countries.
Additionally, Shockat candidly shared the challenges he faces as an Independent MP, emphasising the importance of staying true to his principles, working collaboratively with diverse groups, and adapting to his role as a public figure. The conversation also touched on pressing community issues, including housing shortages, advancements in healthcare through AI, and the implications of global conflicts.

Shockat then made the short journey to Beauchamp City, our ‘Outstanding’ sixth form located in the heart of Leicester. Associate Principal Catherine Bartholomew guided him on a tour of the state-of-the-art school building and, as they walked through the modern facilities, Shockat marvelled at the stunning learning environment and the wealth of resources available to students.
After the tour, Shockat hosted an engaging Q&A session with sixth formers and, together, they touched on a range of pertinent issues that resonated both locally in the Leicester South constituency and also formed part of the national political landscape.
The students eagerly quizzed Shockat about his busy and often unpredictable daily schedule, the challenges of balancing his responsibilities as an MP, and his research methods. They also delved into topics such as the need for modernised library funding and Shockat's efforts to challenge the government from the Left.
Shockat shared valuable advice with students interested in politics, encouraging them to get involved with the European Youth Parliament and to volunteer with their local MP. His insights and experiences provided a fascinating glimpse into the world of politics and public service.
On visiting both schools, Executive Principal James McKenna said: “We really enjoyed the opportunity to meet our local MP, Shockat Adam, today and to share with him the exemplary work we do at Sir Jonathan North and Beauchamp City Sixth Form.
“It was a privilege for our students to hear first-hand how democracy works in action and how a local representative can contribute to driving forward change at a national level.
“Today's visit has been very well received by students and has supported us in our mission to inspire and empower our young people so that they can make good choices about their future.”
