Local MPs visit three Lionheart Schools
We were delighted to welcome Samantha Niblett – the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Derbyshire – to Mercia Academy and Newhall Junior School in Newhall, Swadlincote on 24th January. While on the same day, fellow Lionheart school, Broom Leys Primary in Coalville, was visited by Amanda Hack, the MP for North West Leicestershire.Mercia Academy and Newhall Junior School
Having first enjoyed a tour of the new temporary school building by Principal Jackie Cooper and Executive Principal Sally Wicken, Samantha then met with a number of students who posed questions to her, learning more about the world of politics.
Samantha spoke about life as an MP, her passion to ensure equity of opportunity in education and highlighted the importance of technology in schools, explaining how she hopes to bring big technology companies – such as Snapchat, Facebook and Google – to the local area to inspire young people and demonstrate “the art of the possible.”
Mercia’s Principal, Ms Cooper, said:
“It was lovely to welcome Samantha Niblett to Mercia Academy and to show her round our new modern, purpose-built building,” said Ms Cooper.
“Our students had lots of questions and were really interested in her role and plans for the future"
“She also met with Trust leaders to discuss the new permanent building that Mercia Academy will move into, and the fantastic, further opportunities that it will offer students for academic and vocational study.
“It was great to have her at our school and brilliant to have such insight into the work that she does,” concluded Ms Cooper.
Samantha also appreciated the opportunity to visit the school, saying:
“It was terrific to revisit Mercia Academy this week,” she said.
“The real highlight was chatting to some of the children who had some brilliant questions to ask me.
“I can’t wait to go back!”
Samantha then headed to Newhall Junior School, where she was warmly welcomed by the acting Head of School, Mrs Weaver, who took Samatha on a tour of the school. The school’s junior-aged pupils were equally as keen to learn more about life as an MP, as the neighbouring students were at Mercia Academy.
From the inquisitive questions posed, Samantha explained how she balanced her day-to-day duties as an MP, shared how she got involved in politics, and highlighted the importance of encouraging young girls to pursue an interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths).
Before departing, Samantha shared some crucial advice for those interested in sitting on the Newhall School Council, which is set to launch later this year: she encouraged them to listen and ensure all pupils’ views are considered.
"It was a pleasure to welcome Samantha Niblett MP to our school and introduce her to our enthusiastic pupils,” said Newhall’s Acting Head of School, Clare Weaver.
“They were eager to ask questions and learn more about the work of an MP. It was a valuable learning experience for everyone, and we look forward to showing her around our new school building, once built."
Reflecting on her visit to Newhall, Samantha said: “It was terrific to be shown around Newhall Junior School and to meet the lovely team who educate and support the children.
“I absolutely loved my session with children who had brilliant questions to ask me including ‘what is the thing you like best about your job?’
“Thank you for making me feel so welcome.”
Broom Leys
On the same day, Amanda Hack – who was elected as MP for North West Leicestershire at last year's General Election – visited Broom Leys Primary School in Coalville
Amanda enjoyed visiting all the school classrooms and spending time with some Year 6 pupils, who quizzed her about life as an MP and finding out what she has accomplished in her first six months in post.
Amanda outlined her typical weekly, spoke about why she decided to pursue a career in politics and exclusively revealed that she may soon meet HRH King Charles III!
The discussion also touched on important societal issues, with a strong focus on climate change, while pupils were particularly interested to learn more about Amanda’s journey to becoming an MP, and whether or not a university degree is needed.
